Hawkins, who was also a pastor, passed away on Sunday June 11, at his home in Ripon, California, according to his brother Edwin Hawkins.

“Today, I lost my brother, my pastor, and my best friend. Bishop Hawkins suffered bravely but now he will suffer no more and he will be greatly missed.”

Hawkins recorded his first album, Do Your Best, while studying at the University of California, Berkeley in 1972 and went on to win a coveted Best Gospel Performance Grammy Award in 1981 for The Lord’s Prayer compilation.
His 1990 release, Love Alive III, spent 34 weeks at the top on the Billboard gospel album sales chart and sold more than a million copies. In more recent years, he was inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
Hawkins is survived by two children and two grandchildren.
