HIS COMMENT ON PEOPLES OPINION OF HIS MARRIAGE

“You know… I understand,” Diggs says. “It’s a situation that’s unfortunate, but at the same time, being a black man, I understand. I understand the idea of having something that you call your own, and how it could feel when a member of your clan, so to speak, chooses to be with someone from another clan. I get how that could make someone feel rejected.

“But that being said, I can’t tolerate that because it’s 2010 and I don’t have time for that. When I was younger I did get caught up with that. When I was growing up, there were guys who dated everybody, there were guys that only dated black girls, and there were guys who only dated white girls. Back then, I used to judge the black guys that only dated white girls and for so long, I wanted people to know, I’m not one of those guys.

“But as I got older, I realised what the important things in life are. I can’t worry about changing the way that people see me. If you like me, you like me, if you don’t, you don’t. And luckily, I’ve been just fine, you know what I mean? I think people are becoming more understanding. Once people realize that this is a real relationship and that I’m not with my wife because she’s white, but because she’s a wonderful person, all that other stuff falls by the wayside.”

“I won’t pretend [race] wasn’t an issue, because it was. We’ve had to deal with situations in the past where black women would give her attitude or not acknowledge her, and you’ve gotta nip that s**t in the bud. But for the most part, people have been really positive and I’m proud of that.”
“The older you get, the more you know,” says Diggs. “Different things become important to you. And in many cases, when people have those issues, very rarely can someone change their opinions. The person with those issues has to change from the inside. After constantly banging my head against a brick wall, I realized that you just can’t please everybody.

It did bother me for a long time. I mean, us actors, we wanna be loved by everybody. So it did hurt my feelings, especially when it was black women [shunning me] – my mother’s a black woman. But you can only be who you are and be proud of that and just brush the other stuff off.”

HIS COMMENT ON SLIM THUGS OPINION OF BLACK WOMEN

“I try not to judge people,” Diggs says of the rapper’s remarks. “With comments like that, there’s often a deeper issue that has nothing to do with what the actual comment was. Race is such a deeply embedded issue and people get emotional about it. And when they get emotional about it, they speak from the
gut.

“When that happens, people can get caught up in the wordage, as opposed to where those words and those feelings come from. That stuff really interests me.
Psychologically, I do wonder about those things. But I do think it’s less about color and more about socialization and how we’re raised. It’s deeper than just black women and white women.”
